Strengthening Sri Lanka–Japan Ties: Delegation from the Supporting Organization of JICA-JOCV Explores Collaboration Opportunities with LNBTI

On 27th June, a distinguished 18-member delegation from the Aichi Branch of the Supporting Organization of JICA-JOCV, led by Mr. Mizuo Sakamoto, visited the Lanka Nippon BizTech Institute (LNBTI) to explore potential avenues for collaboration. This visit was part of a commemorative study mission celebrating the 60th anniversary of the JICA-JOCV program. As part of their efforts to deepen cultural understanding and foster international cooperation, the delegation conducted six interactive sessions aimed at enhancing awareness of Japanese society and industry. These included engaging workshops on Origami (traditional Japanese paper folding), Shodō (calligraphy), Matcha tasting (Japanese tea ceremony), and Ninin Baori (a traditional Japanese comedic performance). The program also featured a lecture on the prospects of Japan’s IT industry and a session on Japanese business etiquette and culture.More than 200 LNBTI students actively participated in the sessions. The delegation expressed strong enthusiasm for supporting LNBTI students preparing for internships at leading Japanese IT companies, particularly in Aichi Prefecture. They also conveyed their commitment to helping these students enjoy a comfortable and culturally enriching experience during their stay in Japan. This landmark visit represents a significant milestone in strengthening ties between Sri Lanka and Japan, particularly in the areas of IT education, career development, and intercultural exchange. In discussions with LNBTI management, the two parties explored the development of career pathways, the expansion of global job opportunities for students, and ways to deepen bilateral educational collaboration. The visit was made possible through the initiative and coordination of Professor Ananda Kumara, Vice Chancellor of LNBTI, who previously served as the Founding President of the Mie Branch of the Supporting Organization for JICA-JOCV Volunteers during his time in Japan. Notably, Professor Kumara was the first and only non-Japanese national to lead this prestigious organization in its 60-year history. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to fostering Japan–Sri Lanka relations, he was honored with both the JICA Presidential Award and the Japan Foreign Minister’s Award—the first time a foreign national has received both of these esteemed distinctions.
